Lasik Surgery

Lasik Surgery

What is Lasik Surgery?
Lasik surgery is a type of eye operation where a LASER beam is used to re-shape the eye (cornea) to improve vision so that ideally one can see objects without wearing spectacles.

The term LASIK (in lasik surgery) stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis.

In LASIK surgery, an excimer laser beam is used. In simple terms, in the operation of a lasik surgery, an electric current is passed through a mixture of gases that produces diatomic molecules (two-atom molecules). The excimer laser in LASIK surgery produces an invisible beam of concentrated ultraviolet light that can vaporise the corneal tissue, thus acting like a very precise and sharp 'knife'.

In LASIK surgery for myopia, a part of a cornea is flattened by removing small amounts of corneal tissue to reduce its refractive power. For hyperopia, your cornea is steepened to create more refractive power. If you have astigmatism, the laser smoothens the irregular shape of your cornea to even out its focusing power.

Lasik Surgery is one type of common laser vision correction procedures. Other procedures done by eye specialists are photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), wavefront-guided LASIK and phakic intraocular lens implant.

Lasik surgery is becoming a common operation around the world. To see if you are suitable for lasik surgery, our recommendation is that you should best consult an excellent and caring eye doctor / eye specialist / ophthalmologist in Singapore for a detailed individualized eye consultation to receive the best lasik surgery advice.
